February 7th: Here’s what happened at the Indiana Statehouse this week
This was the fourth full week of the Indiana General Assembly. Women4Change is closely tracking two pieces of legislation this week:
Senate Bill 342, Pregnancy Accommodations, passed in the Senate. However, it passed with an amendment that called for a study committee on those accommodations. The amendment changed the purpose of the bill as it now calls for an interim committee to study “pregnancy and childbirth accommodations and the fiscal impact on businesses within Indiana.”
Women4Change worked with other local organizations, including the Indiana Institute for Working Families, to show support and curate research materials on pregnancy accommodations.
We do not support the latest version of the bill, as it no longer calls for any legitimate changes in how employers treat their pregnant workers. The original bill had bipartisan support, including support from Governor Holcomb’s office.
Senate Bill 299, Fetal Remains, also passed in the senate. The bill outlines expectations and rights related to burials and cremations of aborted fetuses.
Women4Change does not support this bill.
