Conditions at the Indiana State Women's Prison Must Change

COVID-19 measures currently in place at the Indiana State Women's Prison are endangering, not protecting, the health and safety of its inmates. According to a recent report from WFYI, inmates have spent long periods locked in their cells, which have no toilets, running water, or air conditioning.

As advocates for women's health, we are deeply concerned by the Indiana Department of Corrections' refusal to address the danger of these conditions. We support Indiana Sen. J.D. Ford's request that the Indiana Fire Marshall conduct an unannounced inspection of the prison facilities, and call upon Gov. Holcomb and the Department of Corrections to take immediate action on this issue.
