CONSTITUTION VIDEO SERIES

Our democracy’s health and sustainability are predicated on free and open discourse and an informed citizenry capable of engaging in conversation that can lead to understanding and mutual respect and the achievement of common purpose and shared goals.

In a time of heightened political partisanship, increased division and distortion of facts, too much of our communication is rife with anger, anxiety, attacks, and blaming. The ability to listen and learn, discuss and dissent has declined. Too many are fearful about bringing up issues that may be controversial for fear of losing relationships or creating even more division.

It is a civic crisis.

The Women4Change Indiana (W4CI) Civic Education Committee has created a series of educational sessions and several resources designed to address this crisis. “Civics, Civility, and Consensus” are hosted conversations that increase civil dialogue through a constructive process that is unifying rather than divisive. In addition to these facilitated groups and written materials the Committee supported the development of “Foundations of Responsible Civic Engagement''  (FORCE) videos based on the Constitution and Sheila Suess Kennedy’s book “Talking Politics: What You Need to Know before Opening Your Mouth.” Her knowledge and expertise are evident in the videos and the Civic Education Committee members are available to assist individuals, groups, and communities in the use of these materials.

Our vision and hope for all of these resources is that they will contribute to a culture of strong civic engagement and learning, increased knowledge about the foundations of our system of governance, and constructive, informed civil discourse.
