March 29th: Here's what happened this week at the Indiana Statehouse

As the thirteenth full week of the 2019 legislative session comes to an end, Women4Change continues to be YOUR eyes and ears in the Indiana Statehouse.

A big thank you to our members for continuing to our work at the Statehouse. We had Women4Change members sending a clear message to our lawmakers through the following activity:

  • Bias Crimes One-Click tool which helps send emails and make phone calls to legislators

Bills that moved this week:

  • HB 1211 (‘Abortion matters’) Passed out of committee 7-3. Be on the lookout for when it will make an appearance on the Senate floor.

  • SB 192 (‘Nonconsensual pornography’) had its second reading in the House and was ordered engrossed.

  • HB 1547 (‘Consent to pregnancy services of a minor’) passed out of committee 7-0

We had a lot of movement with hate crimes this past week and here is the rundown:

SB12, the original bill covering hate crimes, has yet to move in the house, BUT the hate crimes language was drafted and amended it into SB198. SB198 originally was a sentencing bill for drug related crimes and is now being used to try and fit this language into it. The problem is that the list in SB198 does not include gender, gender identity, and age.  All of these characteristics are vital to inclusive language and not having them leaves out any Hoosier who falls under those categories.

Next week:

Monday, April 1

  • Bias Crimes Press Conference

11 AM in the 3rd Floor North Atrium of the Statehouse

Let’s show our legislators that Women4Change stands firmly committed to protect ALL HOOSIERS by showing up. Bring friends and signs to express our dissatisfaction with the Indiana General Assembly and their approach to a hate crimes bill. Session ends in a few weeks, so now is the time to act!

  • SB 192 (‘Nonconsensual pornography’) is scheduled for a third reading in the Senate Chamber.

  • SB 243 (‘Nonconsensual pornography’) is scheduled for a second reading in the Senate Chamber.

If you can not attend a meeting at the Statehouse during the legislative session consider attending these town hall meetings.
