Discover the Power of Youth

It's time to recognize the power our youth can have.

Malala Yousafzai was 17 when she received her Nobel Peace Prize. Jordan Romero climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro at the age of 9. By the time Mozart was 14, his operas were being professionally performed. There is no denying the potential that young people can have.

At the heart of the Desmond Tutu Center (DTC) is a simple, bold idea: to identify, train, sustain, and connect the next generation of emerging young leaders struggling for social justice and reconciliation around the world and right here in Indiana. The DTC Youth Fellows Initiative is designed to support at-risk youth (16-21) who want to change and challenge existing norms that prevent their community from achieving equality. In July 2016, the first cohort of Youth Fellows selected from Central Indiana traveled to South Africa on a study trip led by the Desmond Tutu Center. On this study trip, the Youth Fellows were exposed to the struggles of Apartheid and sought out key South African lessons for social justice work and community development. Upon their return, the Youth Fellows have applied what they have learned by carrying out social justice projects in their communities. In July 2017, the second cohort of Youth Fellows selected from South Africa will travel to Central Indiana for a study trip.

During the Project Symposium and Celebration on July 15, 2017 audience members will view the stunningly beautiful documentary created during the Youth Fellow’s Study Trip to South Africa (includes a visit with Desmond Tutu), hear a TED-Talk style social justice presentation from the Central Indiana Youth Fellows and additionally, welcome the second Youth Fellows cohort, a group of eight South African young emerging leaders.
